Very Disappointing

We'd read some great things about Agave and the menu looked terrific, so we decided to give it a try.

We arrived after dark, and the path to the restaurant isn't lit, and I really hope they have some solid liability insurance, because some day, someone is going to injure themselves trying to get down there. It was almost pitch dark. We were met halfway by a host that took us the rest of the way. We sat down, had some great appetizers, and then when the entrees came, it started going very downhill. I ordered a strip steak medium rare. It came out way overcooked, pretty much well done with lots of grill residue ruining any remaining flavor. I told the waitress I'd like to have the steak remade properly (I have never sent anything back to the kitchen before in my life) and she didn't say a word. Then 3-4 people came by the table about 3 times each to ensure me that a new steak was coming, making me feel like a prima donna for making a reasonable request. The new steak made it out looking like a sad $4 wal-mart special in the meat department, a nice little slap in the face from the chef for telling him that he made a mistake.

Then, for the rest of the meal, the waitress kept making little comments about it and saying she hoped this and that was better than the steak, making me once again feel uncomfortable.

No comp on the tab (not even the fairly standard free desert comp that many restaurants give) after we ordered desert, we paid and left.

There are good restaurants on St. Thomas with nice people and great food. This isn't one of them. Do yourself a favor and go to Blue Moon instead. Ate there many times during the trip, and every single meal was amazing, and the service was top-notch.

Another Disappointment

I have been living in St. Thomas for over a year and still searching for a good dinner. Agave Terrace must be coasting on a reputation that they had at some point.
When we called there was only one late spot left, but when we showed up, 1/2 the tables were available. We were then placed in the worst spot-right next to the kitchen and the bar. We were told they don't make mojitos- I don't know why. An obnoxious bar patron talked loudly on his phone and then proceeded to light a cigar.
The mango gazpacho was terrible- tasted like lime gelatin was used in it. We waited an hour for our entrees. My dining partner's steak must have fallen into the fire and then been pulled out and thrown on the plate. It was burnt on the outside and supposed to be medium rare. My tuna was overdone but edible. A $100 overpriced poorly done meal. The travel guides need to rethink their rating on this one.

Best Service By Far

Ok, let's agree that St Thomas is not known for its customer service. Most service at local bars & restaurants was pretty slow at best and I felt I often inconvenienced my servers. My wife & I got married at Magen's Bay then had our 20 person reception at Agave Terrace. The view was awesome, the food & wine was excellent and the service was spectacular. Even Head Chef Steven Nakata went out of his way to entertain the children by showing off the hermit crab exhibit. Talk about feeling welcome! All the staff was very kind and attentive as our glasses were never half full. I'm not sure if we'll ever go back to St Thomas, but if we do you will find my wife & I at Agave Terrace every night at dinner time.

Agave Terrace

Our favorite restaurant in the Virgin Islands, the Agave Terrace, is located on the grounds of Point Pleasant Resort. Situated on a hillside, the resort and restaurant offer beautiful Caribbean vistas with a westerly view, so you can see the sun drop below the land on the other side of the bay below. The grounds are well manicured and the staff is friendly, and it's all you would expect of an upscale restaurant.

The restaurant features live steel drum music on some nights and offers fantastic seafood selections. The food is delicious and priced accordingly, but for a romantic special night out, you can't go wrong at the Terrace. Have a cocktail before your meal (or a couple afterward) in the bar and enjoy the spectacular sunset view below.

Agave Terrace at Point Pleasant Resort

Since we hit a few snags checking into the condo, the hotel offered us a complimentary dinner at the Agave Terrace. The Agave is open only four hours a day and is nestle atop a cliff over looking Thatch Cay and the British Virgin Islands. Looking down the hills you can see Coki Beach and Coral world. After all, it's all about location, location, location!

Once we got to the restaurant and saw the prices, we were glad it was free! In all respects, the food would have been totally worth the price if we had paid. I had the Caribbean Jerk Chicken with mashed potatoes and also a small side of oil and garlic penne. The others at the table enjoyed NY Strip steak, lobster tails (that's two!), and the catch of the day. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was elegant and tropical.

I would recommend this place to anyone as long as your wallet is deep enough--our bill for six people totalled $346. YIKES! Save room for the desserts, especially the banana custard!
