While we were waiting for our table at 9pm on Saturday night, a health inspector came and revoked Asolare's health permit. The patrons who were waiting for tables were told that they had to leave. In addition, the patrons who were already sitting and eating were asked to leave. Management did nothing to accommodate their exiled customers. Instead, we were told that they would get us a "great table" at Asolare the next time we visited St. John.

We arrived 1 hour before our reservation so that we could have a drink or two before dinner. We arrived by taxi and walked about 50 feet down several steps, and passed beautiful flowers on the way to the restaurant. We walked in and I was surprised that the reception area was so small. As soon as you walk in there is a bathroom on the left, and a stand for the host on the right, and a curtain in front of you that leads to the kitchen.

The host came over and greeted us very nicely. When we told her that we were early she suggested that we get a drink. A nice touch was that she went over to the bartender and told him our name so that he could move our bar bill directly to our dinner bill without asking us about it.

We walked through the darkly lit, small restaurant to the bar. The restaurant is mostly in brown and rust color tones, and is quite romantic. We sat at the bar and had a couple of nice drinks. Then, we were led to our table right on time.

The service and the food were excellent, and we are pretty picky about food. We shared a sushi appetizer, had salads, and I had the lobster while my wife had the duck. We were both very happy with the food, service, and ambiance.

If you want a wonderful dining experience in St. John, you should try Asolare. It has one of the best views of the ocean looking out toward St. Thomas, and this is reason enough to eat here. Make sure you get a reservation as soon as possible, because there are a limited number of tables with a sunset ocean view.

Once you take in the view, prepare for a fantastic meal. The restaurant specializes in Asian fusion food with continental touches. I really enjoyed the ahi tuna appetizer with Asian noodles, and my fish entrée was perfect. We topped it off with a little ice cream and left rubbing our completely full stomachs.

You can also expect very good service. Our waitress was appropriately attentive and told us about a lot of other great places to eat and other things to do on the island.

Finally, the atmosphere is very laid-back and comfortable. There are only about 15 tables, and the hillside, open-air setting will relax the most restless soul. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Overlooks Cruz Bay. Wonderfully romantic, especially as sun sets on Cruz Bay. Great wine list and attentive service. The specials are truly special. If your budget allows only one expensive meal for your stay, I'd recommend Asolare.
