The Augustiner Keller has been around since the beginning of time, or so it seems. The indoor/outdoor restaurant and biergarten offers a great atmosphere. This place is definitely what Munchen and Bavaria are all about! Even if you have only 2 or 3 days in Munich, I would definitely recommend coming here for dinner and/or later in the evening to hang out in the rear bierhalle. This place is a lot of fun, and the roasted chicken halb hendl is wonderful. Bavarian monks built this place and have been brewing the ever-popular Augustiner brau since the mid-1300s.

At the corner to Circus Krone Straße, you find one of the oldest and most popular beer gardens of Munich, the Augustiner Keller. You should not mix up the Augustiner Keller with the restaurant Augustiner in the Neuhauserstraße, which is also a very traditional and recommended place in the shopping area of the city. From the Hacker Brücke, the Augustiner Keller is within easy walking distance. If you visit a beer garden, you should get there by public transportation and leave the car where it is!

This beer garden has a long tradition of popularity based on the fact that you have had a very good view of the gallows hill on the other side of the road. The gallows was mounted there from 1780 to 1809. The last public death sentence was an execution by hatchet in 1861.

If you are looking for a less touristy spot to eat some good German food, Augustinerkeller may be a good choice. It is centrally located, which makes it a good choice when you need a break from all your walking. The atmosphere is slightly more mellow than the Hofbrauhaus, yet is still lively and fun. The prices are reasonable and the servings are large. In general, German food is quite filling, and the sausages served here are no exception. Try the apple dumplings for dessert.
