What an Adorable Place!

We went to Guarino's because we heard of this cute little private dining room on their second floor. My husband reserved it for us the night before and it was so charming. The young lady who took care of us was the grand-daughter of the owner and she was very accomodating. She told us a little history of the place and said many family members still work there. I think she said her Dad was the manager and brother was the chef.

We enjoyed a bottle of wine (Badiolo Chianti) and a calamari appetizer which was very good. We then had salads, which were a little small, but the dressing was terrific. Next we had the seafood pasta and the veal saltinboca. The sauce for the saltinboca was amazing! The seafood was pretty good too. Closed up with a tiramisu (home made) that was just light enough to keep me from being too full. All in all it was a great experience. I'd like to come back and sit in the garden.

My first time at Guarino's was terrible. My boyfriend and I went for Valentines day. He ordered the special, and without the kitchen telling anyone that there was no more special, they just served us something different. When the waitress realized the dish was wrong, the manager (or host) that sat us, bagged the dish for us, and said we could eat it for breakfast, and he would bring the right food out. He said he wouldn't charge us for the mistake... isn't that nice of him? Then, he told us that the kitchen ran out of the special, but would it be okay to have the ravioli with sauce instead of the pepper sauce that came with it? When we said okay they brought out the same dish as the first time. They told us it was shrimp stuffed ravioli, but both times it was crab stuffed ravioli.

Because we didn't want to make a scene, we didn't say anything. The waitress felt terrible, she knew they messed up twice, but we could tell she was scared to take it off the bill. The lasagna I ordered had a burnt noodle on top, so burnt that I thought I was eating eggplant because of the color. But, they disguised it well by covering it with a fresh layer of cheese and sauce. We will never go back.

After getting lost on the East Side of Cleveland for half an hour, we were in "let’s eat anywhere" mode. A place like Guarino’s wouldn’t normally be on my radar since it has a certain "we advertise in WHERE Cleveland" sort of feel, but my partner’s growling stomach overruled our usual selection criteria.

The Victorian atmosphere was quaint, and the food was certainly above average, but I found it a bit expensive for lunch (in Cleveland, no less). $13 for lunch lasagna seems a little out of whack to me.
