The best i have found in Halifax. The crab bisque is to die for!! They put ginger in everything and since i don't like ginger very much some things are off the list. The dessert menu doesn't have anything that temps me, but the cobbler was very good when i tasted a friends. i agree that the wine menu is a little expensive but overall this place is GREAT! the atmosphere is awesome as well...much better restaurant than the five fisherman!

Lovely Atmosphere, Fantastic Food

I've had the pleasure of dining at McKelvie's on three occasions and each one has been nothing but sheer delight due to the warm and inviting atmosphere and delicious food.

I'm a creature of habit and find that once I sample a specific dish at a restaurant I stick with it and so I'd highly recommend the Thai Shrimp Pasta which consists of succulent tiger shrimp, spicy peanut sauce, fresh ginger, soya sauce, coconut milk, lime juice, garlic and chili oil. A delight to the senses and the shrimp are cooked to perfection.

I'd also highly recommend the seafood chowder as an appetizer. It is the perfect blend of the fruits of the sea and just the right consistency of creaminess.

To finish off a splendid meal I recommend the apple crisp. The dish features just enough sweetness so as not to overwhelm and is complimented by the divine velvety smooth homemade vanilla ice cream.

I tend to choose this restaurant for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries for the ambiance and superb quality of food. While an intimate dinner is usually the order of business I have also attended a function with a group of over 30 individuals and the service and food were equally as stellar.

McKelvie's

Dining in Halifax is wonderful. The food is so fresh, service great and atmosphere very nice. Do it! I'm allergic to shellfish so while my friends eat everything in sight, I had a wonderful steak with fried potatoes! Desserts were great and gooey! The wine list was extensive, but expensive!

If you long for a great lunch in wonderful surroundings or a more gourmet evening experience, McKelvie's is an outstanding choice. There is a full menu of excellent seafood, pastas, chowders and other selections. The building itself is a rather upscale renovation of a former firehouse, but you'd never guess that from being inside. The dining room features large windows and it is very nicely done. There is also an outdoor patio that is a very nice choice, in season.

Meals are well presented and so they look as good as they taste. Our top lunch or dinner choice for those who might have trouble deciding: The 'Too Good Fish Fry', an outstanding array of fresh seafood that is excellently prepared. But don't feel bad if you only opt for the standard fish & chips; it's wonderful. For an appetizer, the bacon wrapped Digby scallops are absolutely decadent.

At just a block up from the Halifax waterfront and convenient to the ferry terminal, McKelvie's is a 'can't miss' pick for one of your first dining stops in Halifax (and like us, you may just find yourself returning again and again.)
