Service Sucked!

food was ok - manager and waitress were rude. we came with a party of six very hungry, tired people on a slowish wednesday evening. (by the time we left the place was totally empty - this place might not last long...) the only table we were offered was right next to the kitchen, in a walk-way. we asked to wait for a nearby table for six with a family paying the bill. we were told that table was reserved, the table by the kitchen was the only choice. desperate, we agreed. after sitting empty for 40 minutes, they finally seated a party at that table. they had to walk right past an empty table for three to seat this party of three at the table for six we requested. kinda rubbed me wrong...

then she forgot part of the order, had to be reminded several times... food gets cold while waiting... etc....

also - they won't provide tap water. at all. i'm not picky about the water i drink - clean tap water is fine for me. and i'd rather not spend 1.5 euros PER GLASS for their "purified" drinking water. at a restaurant that serves potentially spicy food, this seems like a blatant rip-off.

i'm sure there are many far less pretentious, less expensive rijsttafel restaurants in Amsterdam - keep looking...

Shocking Service, Overpriced Food

I've been to this restaurant twice two years apart. It's recommended in all the guidebooks so maybe once it was good but it's clearly resting on its laurels and location. The first time I was a solo diner and was moved 3 times and then they ignored me until I left (on an uncrowded Wednesday night). The second time was with a group of 4 where we were offered the table of our choice (which we took) but then the 'manager' came over and said we couldn't sit there so we moved to another table. Our first choice sat empty the entire time we were there. My friends had to concede that we, as a group, were treated very much as I was as a solo diner. The food is fine, but not great. Amsterdam has many fine Indonesian restaurants with elegant surroundings, gracious service and wonderful food. This is not the place to find it.

Whenever friends came into town to visit, de Kantjil en Tijger was the restaurant of choice. You can't go wrong at this restaurant centrally located on Spuistraat, with great food, a relaxed ambience, and an attentive staff. The cuisine is Indonesian, which is generally very well prepared in the Netherlands, and delicious at this particular restaurant.

The first time, I went in a large group and ordered several rijstafels. About 20 minutes later, our table was covered in small plates of Indonesian fare, all delicious and in large quantities. There was enough for each one of us to taste each plate. The next time I returned, it was just three of us for dinner, and we ordered off the menu--nasi goreng, a spicy meat dish, and a vegetarian entrée. You can't go wrong. In fact, these dishes were arguably better than the rijstafel--there was more of each, so we fully savoured each one. For first-time Indonesian-food eaters, go for the rijstafel,, but if you have a sense of Indonesian food, pick entrées and share them.

The food is excellent, the ambience casual, the decor simple, and the customers a combination of locals and tourists. Two other aspects of de Kantjil that make it even more attractive: the to-go menu option and the early bird special, where you can have a complete meal between 4:45 and 6:30pm for 9€. For 9€, you get rice or noodles, a meat dish, and a veggie dish.

Kantijl en de Tiger offers some of the most authentic Indonesian food in Amsterdam, and the place is usually packed by about 7pm. There are three rijstaffels on offer, the cheapest being 45€ for two people. For this, you get 11 different dishes that include meat, rice, and vegetables (the more expensive ones offer more dishes and include fish), although, obviously, you can order single dishes from the menu should you wish. The staff is happy to take time to explain the menu and dishes so that you really do know what you're getting.

If you are a carnivore and/or like spicy food, it’s one of the best places for a meal in Amsterdam. We got the smallest rijstaffel (or rice table, a Dutch-Indonesian creation of rice, with anywhere from 10 to 20 small side dishes) with 12 dishes. Every single dish was perfect.
