Just Don't Eat There

A few weekends ago, I was in Gdansk for the weekend with my fiancé and her friend, unfortunately the weather was terrible, so we spent most of the weekend fighting with umbrellas in the wind unsuccessfully and drinking beer and eating somewhat more successfully.

Klub Aktora is located in the Old city of Gdansk and is a cosy little pub downstairs with a few tables, some stairs which lead to a more comfortable upper quarter where it's possible to either lounge on sofas or sit on heavy wooden seats. The place is decorated with photos of old presumably Polish actors (possibly quite unknown as no one I was with recognised any of them!).

What coaxed us in to this place was there very reasonable offer of a pint of beer from 5zl. Trojmiasto (Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot) is not the cheapest of cities and that's very good value, my eyes lit up further when I looked on the menu and saw 0.5l of Zywiec Porter for a mere 7zl, that's an excellent price and you can pay 4 ot 5zl for a small bottle of the stuff. A delicious dark beer which is just what I needed to warm me up having got wet! The food was less desirable, the menu served typical Polish food but didn't do it particularly well, whilst my Zurek was reasonable but far from amazing, the girls' pierogi looked sloppy and as though I had made it (I'm about the only person who can successfully destroy the dumpling like chaps), being a huge fan of garlic bread - I had to order some having seen it on the menu.

It was more than disappointing though, it was in fact totally bizarre. Cheap sliced white bread (a rarity in Poland) toasted without any garlic taste what so ever - Peter Kay's Dad would no doubt be a fan! To sum it up - go there for the cheap good drinks and warmth, not food!
