Thameside Pub, Southwark

The Anchor is a historic old pub on Bankside, right beside the Golden Hinde ship and Southwark Cathedral. Just a few steps from Vinopolis and the Globe Theatre, it's got several levels and a good carvery lunch menu. There is a small room in the pub famous for being the room that Dr. Johnson frequented as a regular during the time he was writing his famous dictionary and it's also the pub that Pepys sat in while observing the Great Fire of London. The pub is warm and atmospheric, with a great location and decent prices for the location. Good place to stop if you're on the south side of the Thames. Also it has an outside seating area right on the river for great views of the London City skyline. There's a new section as well as the older parts. Interesting doors and windows from the outside as well.

Carvery, roast dinner of the day. Lots of veggies, gravy and yorkshire pud as well. Decent a la carte menu as well. Prices were surprisingly decent for the location.

The pub environment of London is beyond compare. The great thing is that it is not the same type of bar atmosphere in the States. You will find the food to be the best in London (and yes, the stereotypes of bad food are sometimes true, but nearly never in a pub). Traditional fish'n'chips is always a good bet, but they also will often have sausages and sandwiches that make you wish they were closer to home.
