Court Restaurant, The British Museum

  • June 10, 2003

Court Restaurant is a wonderful way to end the visit of The British Museum. It has a pleasant light, airy, and comfortable atmosphere provided from the steel and glass roof overlooking the round Reading Room with white-tablecloth service. The staff is courteous and professional.

We arrived and were seated shortly before they stopped serving. There were only a few other customers when we were seated. We ordered from a set menu of items. The food was very good.

Court Restaurant at the British Museum

We arrived mid-morning at the British Museum and by 1:00 p.m. were famished. We happened upon the Court Restaurant, which is on the 2nd Floor of the Great Court. Most tables are side by side in sets of 2 tables, with a couple of inches of space in between the two. Don't plan on having a deeply personal conversation here. The couple we were seated next to were friendly and we chatted briefly, but it's hard not to inadvertently eavesdrop on other people's conversations when they're seated so closely.

The food was excellent--I had mushroom soup and a vegetarian hot sandwich which tasted a big like french toast, and my husband had stuffed chicken breast. We each had a glass of wine and afterwards a capuccino. Total cost of the meal was 36£. The service was excellent and it was nice to sit, rest our feet and be served. We had checked our coats near the entrance to the Museum and I wished I had had my coat while dining. It was a little chilly in the restaurant as there is no way to heat such a large room--it's as if the restaurant is floating between the first floor and the glass dome. Downstairs from the Court Restaurant, and still within the Great Court is the Court Cafe where you can order less expensive food.
