Description: I am not a vegetarian and neither are my friends so I was a little bit concerned when one of them suggested that we go to Fellini’s Restaurant for Sunday dinner as I knew that it was a vegetarian restaurant and for me Sunday dinner is all about Sunday roasts. Although I wasn’t exactly looking forward to going I had heard good things about the restaurant from other people so I was curious to try it out and see what I thought of it.
Fellini’s is located in the Lake District town of Ambleside right in the centre of the town. It is housed in a lovely Lakeland stone building and inside is just as nice as the outside and very modern while still retaining a quaint edge to it.
First impressions were really good and the service was excellent. We were shown to a table straight away even though we hadn’t booked and the restaurant was busy. The waiter came with menus and took out drinks order and these arrived speedily before we had even had a chance to properly have a look at the menu.
The choice of food on offer was a lot more extensive than I had imagined it would be as my knowledge of vegetarian food pretty much stops at salads. We decided to not have starters but they sounded lovely and just went straight for mains.
It was difficult to decide on what to go for as everything in the menu was described so well that it all sounded really nice. I was still dubious to how it would taste but the descriptions did a good job at whetting my appetite.
I ordered some roasted butternut and blue cheese crepes with a sauce and when it arrived I was really pleasantly surprised with just how nice it was presented on the plate. It really did look delicious and it was nice to go somewhere that had put a lot of effort into how the food was presented for a change. My friends dinners were also presented really well and as well as looking amazing the food also smelt amazing.
My crepes were absolutely delicious and surprisingly it was so tasty that I didn’t even miss having meat and didn’t even notice it was missing as soon as I took a bite. This was proper vegetarian food that was packed full of flavour and cooked to perfection. I had a taste of one of my friend’s risotto and it was easily as nice as any other risotto I have ever had and in fact was nicer than most that I have tried before.
We also ordered some homemade bread with our meal and this was honestly the nicest bread I had ever had and in all honesty I could easily have just had that as my main meal since it was so good.
After having thoroughly enjoying our mains and cleaning our plates we decided to have some deserts as these also sounded delicious.
We ordered two lemon tarts, a baked pear dish and some ice cream and all of them were delicious. They were perhaps not quite as good as the mains but still better than most restaurant deserts.
Although I wasn’t originally keen on visiting Fellini’s I can honestly say that I was blown away with the quality of the food and the level of service on offer. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it was enough to put me off eating meat but I will most definitely be returning to the restaurant when I am next in that part of the woods.
