Description: On a recent weekend visit to Philly I went with 2 other friends to try three of Chef Jose Garces' restaurants (Tinto, Distrito and Village Whiskey). Distrito was by far the most interesting of the three with swing booths a VW Bug booth, cool lighting, and kitsch everywhere. We loved it! We went for brunch on a Sunday morning and so two courses were included with our meal.
I chose the chips and guac for my first course and chose the steak and eggs for my second course. The chips and guac were excellent (although came with an issue which I'll talk about later) and the steak and eggs was delicious. The steak was probably cooked much more rare than the "medium" that I ordered, but that doesn't really offend me. The only slightly peculiar part of this dish was the large pieces of sea salt on the steak. It was just a bit strange. Overall the meal tasted good, but in some bites the salt was a bit overpowering.
One friend ordered the Nachos Ignacio as an appetizer and the pizza for the main course (Huarache de Tomate). Both were excellent. Actually the Nachos would have made a great meal alone.
My second friend ordered the chips and guac and the fish tacos. Again, both were excellent.
We also tried the tres leches for dessert. I wasn't a huge fan, but I typically don't like desserts. My two friends thought it was fantastic.
All in all, our food was excellent and the ambiance is amazing. Our only issue was with the service. The hostess was very nice as was our server. But at one point during the meal (when a different server dropped off our first course) we ran into a little attitude. We were slightly confused when only the two of us that ordered chips and guacamole received our first course and the third party at our table didn't receive anything. They brought out two bowls of guacamole (for the two first course orders that we ordered) and ONE bowl of chips. This seemed odd. This coupled with the fact that they did not bring our friend's nachos (first course) led us to believe that we were supposed to share the chips with the table. If so, we wanted another bowl of chips. This same sever that delivered the chips happened to be stationed behind our table, so we turned around and asked him for a second bowl of chips. First we got a look that read "you really want another bowl of chips?" and then we got the verbal "Do you really think you'll need a second bowl of chips". I responded that we did in-fact order to orders of chips and guacamole, so it would make sense that we would receive two full orders. He then replied that "the kitchen only gives one bowl of chips". He then didn't say anything and turned around as if he was annoyed but did come back with the chips without saying anything. When our regular server returned a couple minutes later with our friends nacho first course, she asked how everything was doing and I was sure to tell her that everything was "OK" and that we received a little attitude. She didn't really question the issue, but we felt bad that she thought that we meant she had attitude, so we specifically told her we were not talking about her.
Obviously in the scheme of things we are only talking about a bowl of tortilla chips and we really wouldn't even have mentioned the one bowl if our friend had received his first course at the same time as everyone else. So, this wasn't a big issue and we let it pass so we could get on with enjoying our meal. But, with the prices they charge at this restaurant the service should be top notch. And in reality if a customer asks for a second bowl of chips that probably cost less than fifty cents, the proper customer service action would have been to say "right away".
Aside from this one issue, we enjoyed our meal, and would definitely go back. We just hope that all members of the staff have the same level of customer service training. We also want to experience the restaurant at night to fully enjoy the atmosphere.
