I visited Quilon with my daughter recently, we wanted to mark our weekend in London by visiting somewhere special for at least one of the meals - and when we found out this restaurant had a Michelin Star it had to be here we had our dinner on the first night, as what can be more special?!
The restaurant isn't particularly large but there aren't many tables inside so it seems spacious and there's plenty of floor space to get around; there's a good selection of table sizes to suit all size parties, my daughter and I were seated at a comfortable table for two where we sat next to one another and had a good view of the restaurant.
The menu is impressive but easy to choose from as there are simple descriptions next to the name of each dish, this is useful as Quilon specialises in Asian cuisine so some of the dish names are a little exotic for me to be able to work out what's in them - the descriptions ensured I ordered food I really liked as opposed to having to guess. I chose Crab Cakes for my starter, Baked Black Cod for my main course and Spiced Chocolate Mousse for dessert while my daughter opted for a starter of Kothu Lamb followed by Curried Quail Legs. She doesn't have a sweet tooth so decided against a dessert, although did request a plain portion of vanilla ice cream after she'd finished her meal to round it off.
Everything we ate in Quilon was delicious, my Crab Cakes were absolutely the best part of the meal as far as I was concerned as they were fresh and light with the perfect amount of seasoning. The taste of the crab was absolute and I couldn't find any hint of another ingredient, this is excellent news as often crab cakes are padded out with 'something else' but these were unadulterated and very delicious! The Baked Black Cod was equally wonderful and came served with a small portion of steamed white rice, I found this to be an incredibly rich main course with the fish being meaty and cooked to absolute perfection - something that doesn't always happen when you order chunky pieces of cod in a restaurant but this was cooked, or baked, to exactly my tastes.
My daughter was highly complimentary about her food, stating that the Kothu Lamb was rich and full of delicious flavours - I sampled a small amount and didn't like the spices that had been used, but this was purely personal tastes so I can't criticise Quilon for that! It was nicely presented in a dome, the lamb being chopped and mixed with a very thick sauce to bind it together but it was a little too spicy for me so I was glad I'd chosen something else as ordinarily I'm a very big fan of lamb. Her Quail Legs main course was absolutely tiny but she said the meat was so rich she was full before she'd even finished her meal, these were dry curried and again rather spicy but in her opinion the spiciness complimented the rich gamey flavours to perfection.
My mousse dessert was wonderful, just perfect. A thick solidified mousse sitting on top a base of crunchy hazelnuts, the chocolate was spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg plus a few other things which I couldn't quite put my finger on. All the flavours complimented one another beautifully and the dessert was so rich and filling that I couldn't even finish my portion and ended up leaving a third of it on the plate as I was simply too full up to manage another bite! My daughter said her ice cream was of the highest quality too and she was glad she'd decided to have some as this simple dessert cooled her palate after so much spicy food.
The wine menu is excellent, full and catering for all budgets. We chose a basic red as neither of us are big wine drinkers, but Quilon also have a fully stocked bar if you fancy something other than wine. Bottled water is served at the table and once you've finished one bottle another is automatically brought over for you, perfect when eating Asian cuisine as sometimes alcohol doesn't stop the burn in your mouth as you eat!
I can't recommend Quilon highly enough and would urge you to visit if you're in the Westminster area of London. Accessibility is fine as the restaurant is all on the one level with wide doorways and a large bathroom which would accommodate wheelchairs, there's plenty of room to get around inside with wide aisles and lots of space between tables. Children, sadly, are not well catered for (although they are allowed to dine here) and there are no high chairs or specialised children's menu - this is a shame but I suppose I can see the reasoning behind this as Quilon has such a calm and tranquil atmosphere that small children would not really fit in, and would probably not feel comfortable in such surroundings anyway.
Highly, highly recommended by me.
