This is a modern British restaurant along a road in Derby that has quite a few different restaurants in competition with each other in very close proximity. I think over the last few years we have probably been about ten times with a number of different people, both friends and family. In the last few months they have had a major face lift and opened out the back of the restaurant to make the seating capacity about double what it was.
The décor is modern, leather and chrome with glass, all very smart and slick. As you enter the restaurant from the street the bar is on your right and this is where you are greeted and then escorted to your table from here. Every time I have been there have been enough people in the place to make you feel that there is a bit of a pleasant ambience but it has never been crammed or even full enough to make talking to companions on your own table difficult.
Last year they offered a meal of two courses for about £12 but just recently I went with friend s and the only set menu option was for three courses for £15.95 I believe. We were all sufficiently excited by this to go for the three courses that indeed we could manage to fit it all in. This option is only available from Sunday to Thursday, on Friday and Saturday this special goes up in price to £18.95 which is okay but not quite as good.
Once we went for lunch and had two of our daughters with a four year old and a fourteen month old baby and we received the same welcome as when we had come with adults only. They provided a high chair and there was a special children’s menu offering simple good food similar to their main course in smaller portions.
The most recent visit I had was with a group of ex colleagues to celebrate the retirement of yet another one of our little group from our Looked After Children Education project in Derby.
There were about ten of us and they sat us in the back part of the restaurant on a large table. This meant we were still part of the main area but were able to hear each other and not disturb others if we talked a little louder because we were in a bigger group. We all opted for the £15.95 menu and this meant you could choose any starter, main and dessert from the menu so not a bad deal. I believe a couple of the options may have had a slight surcharge but not many. Considering some of the main meals were about £12.95 we felt that we got pretty good value.
The starters offered a soup which is never an option for me as I cook soup a lot at home and it is far too filing for a starter) . Also on offer was Goats Cheese Filo Parcel with mixed Leaves or Smoked Mackerel Pate with t with toasted Ciabatta Croutes and finally a Chicken, Smoked Ham and Woodland Mushrooms on Toast, With Parmesan and a Roast Garlic Aiol. I think most of us went for the goat’s cheese with mixed leaf salad and it was very tasty and the mixed leaf salad had a very tasty spiced Sesame and Honey dressing all very nicely presented on white square crockery.
The main courses were far more numerous and caused us a lot more thought. Some of the dishes did require you to pay a supplement and these included; 8oz Derbyshire Onglet Steak (£1.75 Supplement) ,8oz Locally Sourced Rump Steak (£2.45 Supplement), 10oz Braised Daube of Beef, Creamed Potatoes, Buttered Seasonal Greens and a Bourgignon Sauce of Merlot, Baby Onions and Smoked Bacon 8oz Signature Gourmet Burger, Local Recipe "Homity Pie" Poxon’s Black Pudding Stuffed Loin of Pork, Richard Taylors Award Winning Bangers, Hand Raised Lamb and Leek Pie. All the meals come with chips or creamed potatoes and various vegetables.
The food is beautifully cooked, the beef I had was the 8oz Derbyshire Onglet Steak which did carry a £1.75 Supplement but it melted in my mouth and the sauce that accompanied this was rich and very tasty. I think at least half of our group ordered this choice, one had the hamburger which was truly enormous and as I was so enjoying my choice I didn’t notice much what others had ordered.
Finally we had to choose a desert. I am not fussed on stodgy puddings and if crème brulee had been a choice I would have gone for that but unfortunately this was not to be so I had to choose from, Treacle Tart OR Graze Mess, OR Chocolate Fudge Cake, OR Traditional Bakewell Tart, OR Cheese and Biscuits. I struggled but ended up opting for the Graze Mess which was really quite good although I did leave a lot of the meringue as it was rather too sweet.
Drinks were a reasonable price and we certainly didn’t feel ripped off by the prices. We were happy with the service and clubbed together to leave a pretty good tip for the girl who had been looking after us.
Every time we have eaten at this restaurant we have enjoyed really quality food, nicely presented. It is freshly cooked and all the vegetables nicely cooked not soggy while the salads are crisp and fresh looking. Service is efficient and friendly and prices very reasonable we have found.
The toilets are down a long corridor but I don’t remember it being difficult for wheel chair access. They were clean and everything worked that should. The restaurant is straight off the street on ground level so this is a good option for those with any mobility problems or those who, like us, who turn up with a push chair.
All in all this is a classy looking restaurant that produces excellent food and a very good price. It is never full to capacity but is always busy enough to make it feel like there is a bit of atmosphere about the place. It is a restaurant that we go to quite frequently so I can recommend it for quality, price, service and ambience.
