Located on the corner of St. Mary's Street and Corn Alley is the restaurant where the magic is created. This spot is extremely popular with the locals, as Roti King makes some of the best curried roti on the island.
The restaurant
Roti King operates within a small yellow wooden structure at the junction of two busy streets. The building features a small dining area, a payment counter and a kitchen in the back. The payment counter appears to be constantly crowded, as new customers flock in to take the place of those leaving with their fulfilled orders. The dining room has approximately five small wooden tables, each surrounded by rustic looking chairs. There is a definite laid back atmosphere at the restaurant and it's generally packed with hungry clientele.
The food
Obviously, the specialty of Roti King is in the form of great tasting rotis. The types of roti served at the restaurant include chicken, vegetable, conch and shrimp roti. From what I have observed, they're very generous with the meat portions, and the roti skin literally melts in your mouth. Other dishes on their menu include burgers, fries, hotdogs and various creole meals. I, personally have only tried their chicken roti, but it was seriously finger licking good.
The beverages
The restaurant offers various soft drinks to wash down your meal. The most popular choice for the locals appear to be the freshly made local drinks such as passion fruit, guava, tamarind and ginger beer. A wide assortment of soft drinks are also stocked, but I found the restaurant to be considerably lacking in the alcohol department. Only a few local and imported beers were available to choose from.
The cost
The rotis are priced differently according to the type of roti ordered. The cost ranges from USD $5 to $7, and you are definitely served your money's worth. I found the restaurant to be rather affordable, with a full meal setting you back approximately $10.
Parking
Roti King does not have any parking facilities, and most customers tend to pull off to the side of the road, and quickly collect and pay for their order. If you intend to actually sit down and eat in the restaurant, the closest parking lot is at Redcliffe Quay for an hourly charge of USD $0.75.
Summary:
I absolutely enjoyed the lunch I had at the restaurant. For a delightfully seasoned roti, or to have a taste of local creole food, Roti King will not disappoint. The only tip I can offer is this: Simply show up and bring your appetite.
