Description: I had heard mixed reviews of the Red Cave Restaurant, but to be fair, we had a good meal in the place. The Red Cave Restaurant is nicely done out with a long wicker arch entrance to the dining tables beyond.
The restaurant is obviously a cheaper establishment but is handily located on the closest drag to the entrance to Petra. As a local restaurant, it does not serve alcohol. The restaurant also offers various day trips for tourists, although we didn’t take them up on anything.
The restaurant claims to sell traditional Bedouin food, but to be fair they could tell me anything and I wouldn’t know. The menu consists of stews and the ubiquitous hummus. We discovered our first experience of the wonderful lemon and mint drink on offer in many Jordan restaurants and bars, and I could truly give up alcohol if more UK bars sold these. They taste like a fresh Mojito, but of course without the Rum.
We enjoyed our hummus and Greek salad, but our main was just chicken and tomato stew with rice. It was very edible but there wasn’t much to make it exciting or memorable. It is worth ordering salads with your main courses, as they tend to lack green. As meals are cheap in the Red Cave, a salad doesn’t break the bank.
The restaurant was quiet, and the service although friendly was a little slow on the day we visited. Overall, the Red Cave is a reasonable if not exceptional choice for a meal.
