Description: We were looking for a restaurant in the West End/Covent Garden area before an evening at the theatre and came upon Wahaca. It was absolutely wonderful, fresh, different and a must-do if you want a good, reasonably priced but deliciously different meal.
It is owned by Tommi Miers, a winner of Masterchef cooking competition in the UK. She has become a bit of a television personality/quite well known chef, but the restaurant reflects her passion and commitment to all things Mexican.
You go downstairs to a basement area, and when you get there it is bright, colourful, funky and full of texture and interesting things to see. We were greeted nicely and brought straight to our table. The waiter was low-key and very friendly. He explained how the menu worked and then left us to select what we wanted.
It was busy and full of atmosphere, with a real mixture of locals and tourists - always a good sign. We ordered drinks - I ordered white wine - big mistake. It tasted fine but came in a thick glass tumbler - this put me off a little, I would have preferred a more delicate glass, but I should have known better in a place like this. My husband ordered a hibiscus mojito - heavenly, heavenly, heavenly. I cannot tell you how gorgeous it tasted.
There were lots of interesting things on the menu that I have never seen in any restaurant here before. We opted to go for the street food selection - sort of like tapas. It was a selection of small dishes to share. They came at different times, so it felt like a feast that went on forever. The food was so colourful, zingy and fresh. My favourite thing was the pork pibil tacos - so yummy. Everything was super tasty though - I wasn't too sure what we were eating, but I didn't care. I would definitely recommend this option, as you get to try a small selection of most of what is on the menu.
Our son was not so keen on any of the food though. He is a rather unadventurous and picky 8 year old, and felt that everything was just a bit too alien for him. So if you have a child like this, it might not be the best option.
Our street food feast, starter of nachos and dips and 2 drinks came to the grand total of £36.00. I thought this was excellent value for what we had.
I would definitely recommend Wahaca. It is just a bit different from anywhere else, the atmosphere was lovely, the funky surroundings are memorable and the food is just wonderful and very reasonably priced.
