Description: Looking for something along the lines of a home cooked dining experience, the front desk clerk at my hotel suggested Piggyback Barbeque. I have to say, I was skeptical upon arrival as the place looked pretty small and didn't really strike me as the sorta place I could get a good "meat & potatoes" type meal. In spite of my initial cursory opinion, I went in.
While considering my dinner preferences for the evening, I was thinking about something like meatloaf with mashed potatoes or perhaps a good steak with an Idaho baker. Unfortunately, there were no such options on the menu but I was there and didn't really feel like hunting down something else. I settled in to the pulled pork platter which came with a choice of two sides (coleslaw, potato salad, cajun rice, buffalo chips, fried okra, mac n cheese, sweet potato fries or bbq baked beans) and hush puppies.
The pulled pork was very good and had just the right amount of bbq sauce slathered across the generous portion. I loved the baked beans, but unfortunately cannot say the same for the coleslaw. I think living in Iowa spoiled me with their creamy version of the picnic favorite as most places make it with a vinegar base, which is how Piggyback made theirs. Not my thing.
In addition to the pulled pork platter, they offer a number of other barbeque favorites including pork ribs, chicken, beef brisket, burgers and sandwiches. Their offerings were pretty standard fare for the types of barbeque places I've been to in Virginia and Tennessee. For those catering a big family or corporate event, they do have bulk-to-go items sold by the pound as well as group platters and "ten packs" to serve up to 10 people.
They offer bottomless Pepsi products as well as a decent selection of beer and wine.
Piggyback Barbeque is open daily at 11:00am and provides delivery service after 5:00p.
