We went to the one in the Trafford Centre on a recent visit to the shopping mall in Manchester. I must say I didn’t think it lived up to the hype – other people must be seeing something that I’m not!

Nando’s is located just inside the door of the main entrance into The Orient food hall and I think this was my first problem with the place. A lot of the tables are located in the entrance way and it gets very draughty in there when the doors open, which is quite frequent considering how many people pour through the doors each day.

My second issue with the place was the queuing. Like I said, it is very popular and there is always a queue to get in. When we went we waited for twenty minutes before we were shown to a table. This isn’t the last of the queuing though, because after you’ve sat down, received your menu and decided what you want, you then have to go to the counter and place your order. Once again the wait was about ten minutes. I couldn’t help but think that there was probably an easier way to do this for everyone involved because the queue at the counter meant that the waiting staff had to squeeze through with trays of food.

The waiting staff are extremely friendly and laid back, which seems to be the whole idea behind Nando’s. The restaurant is loud and relaxed. The tables are wooden, as is all of the rest of the furniture and the walls are emblazoned with logos about the quality of the ingredients included in meals.

The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. It usually opens around 11.30am and closes at 11pm during the week, midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and at 10pm on Sundays.

The food itself was good. Not brilliant, but good. We ordered a menu that included half a chicken and two side orders with two drinks for around £15. This was pretty good value really and is probably one of the things that makes the place so popular. The chicken (which is halal) was beautifully moist and there was plenty of it. You choose your own secret recipe sauce from the selection on the counter (where you also get your own cutlery). We opted for a hot sauce and a garlic sauce, both of which were very tasty. For the sides we went for chilli chips and garlic bread. The chips were nice enough, but the garlic bread was a bit of a let down – just a roll warmed up with a few herbs on.

Overall, I’d say the food is good and the value is very good, but neither of them are worth the queues – there are other places where you can get a relaxed meal brought to your table for not much more than we paid here. Close
