Excellent and Accessible

It may have recently surpassed Marseille in terms of size and economic weight, but in its heart it remains rather provincial. It is more a town in the country than a cultural metropolis. This was plain to see in the nightlife and restaurant options that were on offer. Living in Nice, I am accustomed to being able to find a good meal until after midnight in many places and to being able to find a drink until well into the small hours. This is, of course, not only true of Nice – Paris and Marseille are the same. However, by 10h30, Lyon seems to be closed. Therefore, we were grateful to find Cafe Milano open. It seemed to be the only establishment in the modern area of Lyon that was.

This proved to be a stroke of luck in two ways. First, it allowed us to get a both something to eat and to drink. And, second, it was rather good. As the name might suggest, it was an Italian restaurant. It served good food and had a beautifully-lit terrace at the rear that allowed us to enjoy a balmy evening by the Rhone.

The food at Cafe Milano was good. I opted for the simple option: pizza. However, at no point did I regret. My pizza reine (ham and mushrooms) was large, well-cooked and heavy on sauce. It was excellent. My girlfriend had a pasta dish that was also very good, although not quite as tasty as my pizza. In both instances the portions were delightfully large considering the quality. We had a carafe of the house red with our dinner and found this to be very good also, if a little pricey (15 Euros for 50cl)

The service at Cafe Milano was excellent. We were part of a large group, but we had no problem getting seated and were served quickly and efficiently. Everyone got the right dishes and the food came extremely quickly. One member of our group even arrived late (after the kitchen had closed) and they managed to rustle something up for him.

I enjoyed Cafe Milano tremendously. The food was good. The wine was good. And, the setting was great. It cost me around 25 Euros each for dinner, which was very reasonable for the quality. It may have been the only option we had, but it still seemed to make plenty of effort.
