Description: With a trip to Amsterdam, we were promised that we would be at the best Chinese in Amsterdam. Well our expectations were high. In this review I tell you my experiences.
Location
Middle of the promenade. Yet right in the tourist center of Amsterdam is this restaurant.
Address: 115-117 Zeedijk Amsterdam. Open from 11.30 o'clock in the morning until midnight. My experiences our of the lunchtime. You cannot miss. It is opposite of the Chinese temple and right in addition to what I thought was the most famous Chinese restaurant, namely Nam Kee. You know, the famous book and movie Oysters of Nam Kee.
The restaurant
The restaurant consists of the ground floor and first floor. When you stand in front of the restaurant you'll not noticed this. We had dinner on the first floor, because there is a large table was reserved for us. We walked throughout the restaurant downstairs and looked our eyes out. Typically, there mainly Asian people eating. While upstairs more the westerners were. Maybe this was a coincidence! The staircase was not one of the easiest.
Interior
The interior is almost an austerity that you say, I sit at a Chinese. Formica tables and chairs. They could easily be shifted, as a group to lunch. A kind of dark linoleum floor. Furthermore, it was quite bare. Also wall decorations were almost nonexistent. Yes, of course, a Buddha statue. The top floor is a long room, on the window side with a small kitchen and bar. In the kitchen the last touches to the dishes. You can follow this process.
Operation
Friendly staff with a nice smile taking the order. But no one knows the menu by heart. Because every time had to be identified on the plastic menu, order what they wanted. The beverage writing went fairly quickly, but then bringing it lasted an eternity. Let alone the orders of the menu. When I asked the bill when they saw me right away. And the plate with the sweets and the cash register receipt came quickly to me. That was no problem, but again the wait for the change. The sweets were special, with a coconut flavor in a nice shiny Chinese packaging.
The menu
A black with red plastic menu, which in Chinese and English. Fortunately there is another menu with only pictures of various dishes. Well it's just a sport to find out which picture belongs to the text. The various dishes from Peking duck to stuffed eggplants are really reasonable in price for Amsterdam standards. Between 11 and 14 euros will get you a dish with rice or noodles. The rice is added, the other dishes you have to pay extra.
The portions are large. For example the fried shrimp. In the tempura batter will be 6 large shrimp croquettes. Incidentally, this was delicious. But then the real lunch, the Peking duck. The color is good. You know the pretty rusty brown color. But the meat does not look great and is not what I'm used to, pieces of fat throughout the meat, not a grilled crispy crust. The thirteen euro I paid for was simply too much. Because 80 percent of meat dish I left standing. And I was not alone at the table. Everyone pushed their meat dish on the side and went over to the side dish. Fortunately, the noodles were reasonable.
What is my experience?
I will never come here again. I thought it was not the best Chinese in Amsterdam. At least I hope not, because then I do not even know how the other Chinese restaurants must be like. My expectations were high, but after this experience, went down. The price is reasonable. The quantity level is high but the quality is not enough.
