Because of the weather conditions, the track is only open from early November to early April, so the time where it is available is rather limited. Add on to this the fact that the track is heavily regulated, i.e., only a limited number is allowed into the track at any one time, in order to make sure that all hikers are accommodated in huts that are placed there for overnight stays (there is no camping there), to ensure that the tracks are not overcrowded, and to protect the environment. I heard that the scenery is incomparable, and that flightseeing does not even come close. But I leave it to those of you who will have the opportunity to do both. However, having walked a small portion of Queen Charlotte Walk (see my entry on Marlborough Sounds), which is not even a very well known track in New Zealand, I can say that if you don't make it to Milford Track because of scheduling or some such things, there are plenty of spectacular tracks in New Zealand that have easier access.
