Description: This is Antigua's only helicopter company, and from my experience, they were pretty awesome! I had never been on a chopper before, but I was very excited, as I work in the aviation industry. The trip which would take me to see the volcano, Soufriere Hills in Montserrat, was a birthday gift and the management and staff of Caribbean Helicopters ensured that my special day was special indeed.
I was scheduled to arrive at their office, located in Jolly Harbour at 9:15am, 45 minutes prior to departure. When I showed up right on time, there were two other persons who were to be my companions on the journey. Introductions were made, and it turns out that they were a married couple who were visitin Antigua from Toronto, Canada. We were all really excited, armed with our digital cameras and itching to go.
Soon after, a member of staff waved us into an office. He was really friendly and professional, first making sure that no one in our small group was ill at ease. After confirming that everyone was doing ok, he proceeded to give us the safety talk. We were given all the important information needed for our trip, like how it's important to duck when approaching a helicopter after it has started it's engine, so as to avoid an unplanned execution!
We then geared up, grabbed our headsets and approached the helicopter, which was waiting for us outside on the green lawn. The aircraft which was a Bell 206, appeared in be in great condition, and was of a metallic blue colour. Ducking our heads, we ran towards the chopper and jumped inside. The husband sat infront with the pilot, and the wife and I took residence in the back seats. Another staff member of Caribbean Helicopters helped us to buckle our seatbelts securely, before waving us off and wishing us bon voyage.
Within moments, we were hovering above the ground, like a giant humming bird, and it was an amazing feeling. We slowly rose in altitude, before heading towards to coastline. The view from the helicopter was nothing short of amazing, and busied myself with my camera, trying to get as many wonderful shots as possible.
The pilot started to point out things of interest that could be seen from the sky. The mangroves, resorts and even a golf course appeared quite miniature from our aerial view. He was very informative, friendly and extremely professional. All questions were welcomed and answered to the best of his ability. I felt as if I was truly in good hands.
When we arrived into Montserrat's airspace, the pilot continued his commentary, giving us a bit of the island's history and some details concerning the massive eruption which destroyed the nation's former capital of Plymouth. I felt as if the pilot chose the best angles to hover, so as to provide everyone with a clear view of all the sights. All too soon, it was time to return to Antigua, and for our helicopter ride to come to an end.
We had an exceptionally smooth landing, and the pilot thanked us for choosing to fly with the company. We in turn thanked him for a job well done, and for getting us back safely. It was a morning well spent, and I highly recommend anyone to take a tour with Caribbean Helicopters.
