This former railway, now bike trail, connects Amherst to Northampton and beyond. The trail starts at its east end in the southern end of Amherst College's land. It passes through Hadley, running parallel to Route 9. The sections in Northampton have been extended north to Leeds and south to Easthampton.
The riding is easy and smooth with barely any intersections with roads. Using it during peak season (a nice, sunny cool day in late spring or early fall), you'll see bikers, runners, roller bladers, and others... but not too many others. The trail never seems crowded. There are more than a few nice stops along the way, including Cook Farm's Ice Cream (south on South Maple Street), all of downtown Northampton, and the Connecticut River. I used bike into Northampton via this trail instead of using the local bus whenever I had a chance -- highly recommended if you're in the area and have a bike and a couple hours.
