I suggest first visiting Jamestown, which lies at the western end of the Colonial Parkway, then driving the Colonial Parkway to Yorktown, while stopping along the parkway at designated turnouts or overlooks to read informative signs about historical events.
A combination entry fee allows for discounted admission to both Jamestown and Yorktown. The fee is good for seven days.
Jamestown Settlement is located near to Jamestown Island, but is not operated by the National Park service and requires a seperate admission fee. I thought the national park activities were good enough.
Colonial Williamsburg can be explored without paying the admission fee. Without paying the fee you can still explore the town and see some of the interior of the restored buildings. If, after an initial visit, you feel the need to explore further, several admission fee options are available from one day to annual pass.
