From atop the mountain, one can view all the beaches, the Port of Santos, and area municipalities. Being that it is located on a mountain, one needs to arrive there via one way or another. Will leave the choice for you.
One method is via cablecar and the other is by walking up a lot of steps.
The cablecar is to be considered, although the steps leading up the mountain are scenic as well. Above all, if considering the steps, they are a very long travel upward. All 415 of the steps. Yes, I typed correctly, 415 steps.
On top of the mountain will be seen a famous chapel called Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat.Mp>
The historical value of this location is as beautiful as the scenic view.
Its history dates back to the days of 1599. Its governor general named Dom Francisco de Souza, admired Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate (Holy Mother of Mount Serrat) so much that he ordered the construction of the Monte Serrate Chapel. It is the oldest temple in Santos. Every year on the 8th of September, they celebrate the birth of that chapel, with procession celebrations.
Its most interesting history occurred in the year of 1614.
In that year, the naval ships of Holland invaded the area and the citizens of Santos escaped certain death by climbing up the mountain. Once atop the mountain, they prayed for salvation to Mother Mary. As this occurred portions of the walls are said to have fallen on the advancing armies of Holland below, therefore saving many people above from certain death.
