Ever since my brother and his family invited us to the Gilroy Gardens last year, I've been a huge fan of it! The park is very, very family-oriented from their "family" meal deals to the bathroom changing stations to their rides & attractions.
Pricing for meals is fair - for me, I didn't feel like I was getting price gouged like I do when visiting Disneyland. The family meal deals run around $35 and can range from Italian (pizza/pasta) to Asian (chicken teriyaki/rice) to Mexican (tacos/tortillas), which can feed up to a family of 6.
The toddler area is great with its "little" rides and water play area. Older kids will enjoy the older water play area which is quite elaborate and expansive. My two-year old son really enjoyed the paddleboats. He was kicking and screaming wearing the flotation device, but once we got on the water, he didn't want it to end. He especially liked hearing the "dinosaurs" roaring out over the water. The two driving rides were quite clever also. The "modern" car had a car wash and a speed trap with a motorcycle officer chasing you down. We let our son "drive" the car which he loved.
When it was time for his nap, we were able to stroll through the well-manicured gardens, and get a brief rest on the bench. This definitely gave time for all of us to get a rest before our final play time at the play structure.
Both years, we went on Father's Day. Even on such an "important" day, the park never felt crowded. We haven't been there on other special occasion days, so I'm not sure if the park ever gets too over-crowded. The weather was a mild 72 degrees both times so heat wasn't ever a problem. The gardens provided any needed shade.
If you are visiting the San Jose area with children, I highly recommend driving down to Gilroy and enjoy your day there. You can also apply your admission to a family membership package and visit again later in the year. The one main drawback is that the park is not closer to San Francisco! Otherwise, I would visit much more often!
