During the early 1800s, the Hacienda was a refuge for family & neighbors against possible Indian raids, of which there were none. Antonio Severino Martinez became famous for his commercial trade ventures with Chihuahua, Mexico and with America over the Santa Fe Trail.
Severino owned caravans of mules and horses that he used to transport raw wool, blankets, clothing, animal hides and other products. His return trips from Mexico brought back iron, cotton, medicines & ceramics to sell or barter with the local people. In his later years, he became involved in politics and was nominated mayor of Taos under both the Spanish and Mexican governments.
The Hacienda has two courtyards of which one was for the family and their servants. During the 1820s they used this area for working, cooking and home and farm activites. The rooms surrounding the courtyard were basically used when the weather was bad. They had their own chapel, granery and trade room. The trading room was the first operation of this sort in the Taos Valley.
One of the most impressive rooms was The Cocina or kitchen. They prepared food to feed anywhere from 15-30 people at a time. The cooking area was constructed on an elevated lower platform where coals were brought from the main chimney and placed under pots. The smoke was then drawn along the bottom of the platform and into the flue. There was a higher level above the cooking area that provided a warm place to sleep when the weather turned cold.
The Hacienda was also a major trade center for The Mountain Men and many of their traps, furs and rifles are on display in one of the rooms.
Hacienda de los Martinez is on the list of National Historic Landmarks and is open Mon.-Sat. from 10:00-5:00 and on Sundays 12:00-5:00.
