Description: For those who are Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts, coming to Wisconsin is like a trip to the Mecca . . . the inspiration of the world renowned architect.
Born in nearby Richland Center, Wisconsin Wright chose a beautiful overlook of the Wisconsin River for his Taliesin Home which now serves as a visitors’ center and opportunity for folks to tour his estate to see the features that makes his style of architecture so unique.
Guests can come to Taliesin and experience one of several tour offerings. Be prepared, however . . . they are not inexpensive. When I arrived shortly after noon on a Sunday, I was between tour times which made my decision easy as to whether or not I would pony up the $47 for the house tour. They do recommend calling ahead and making reservations if you really want to take the tour.
Other tours are offered, but not on a daily basis. The "Loving Frank" tour is a combination house tour and readings from the book of the same name and is offered on the second and fourth Fridays of each month at 10:00am. At $57 you really must LOVE Frank.
The house was built over the course of some 50 years. He continued to tinker and add to it throughout his life, even while living there. History shares that there had been two serious fires including one which was arson by a servant resulting in the death of his mistress and several others.
I loved the view from the hillside as the Wisconsin River provides a wonderful backdrop to the property. I must admit, however, today the view of the property from the other side of the river is much more picturesque.
Taliesin Preservation Inc. has as its mission to preserve and provide educational access to Wright's legacy. They largely support their efforts through the tours and an on-site gift shop. There is also a small cafe where visitors may enjoy a scenic spot for lunch (11a - 4p) during the summer and early fall seasons. They also offer dinner 4:30p - 7:30p on weekends and evenings when there are performances at the nearby American Players Theatre.
I would say this is a "must see" for those who have studied and admired the career and life of Frank Lloyd Wright. For more information, be sure to check out their website at http://www.taliesinpreservation.org/ .
