Description: The Craters of the Moon National Monument is situated on the end of the 60 mile long Great Rift Zone on the Snake River Plain, and is well-known for its barren, almost otherworldly volcanic landscape. One of the best-preserved flood basalt areas in the continental US, the Craters of the Moon is an ocean of cooled lava, punctuated with cinder cones rising to 700 feet, and other volcanic features like spatter cones, cinder cones, fissure vents, raft blocks, lava tubes. Visitors can take in the volcanic splendor on the 7-mile Loop Road, which provides access to trails throughout the monument.
