I was robbed whilst I was asleep in my hotel room on the 05JAN10 at 5.20am.
I was staying at the Hotel Sous Le Badamier when the incident occurred. All my valuables were taken (mainly business related items and all my money).
No hotel staffs were on-site when it happened - the "security guard" was actually napping when I woke him up and told him what had happened. No one could even get hold of the Hotel management till 7.30am some 2 hours later. I was very distressed in how the incident was being dealt with. There was no sense of urgency or understanding to how serious matter was.
The assistance offered to me was nonexistent – I was just left to my ordeal, from dealing with the police to contacting the Embassy. I even had to look up the telephone numbers myself on the internet as no one lifted a finger to help.
The impression I was given in dealing with the police and hotel management is that they wanted to play down the incident and try to belittle the gravity of the affair by fobbing me off with stories that I could go back and claim through my insurance. As if with just a simple hand written police report that they were prepared to provide, it would resolve all my problems once I send it off to my insurer when I got back. How patronising?
Since the incident I have been chasing the Mauritian government on the progress of their investigation but to no avail. Nor the tourism police or the Tourism authorities seem to want to pursue the matter. Unfortunately these types of crime against tourists are getting more and more violent and are occurring more often than before.
How much longer will the Mauritian government ignore these incidents? How many more victims are needed in order for them to take action?
Has the Indian Ocean paradise just turned into hell?
A thought always lingers "This could have turned out quite differently if I'd woken up during the break-in".
