Description: Hotel Villa di Sorrento


The Hotel Villa di Sorrento is ideally situated right in the centre of Sorrento in the Piazza Tasso the heart of Sorrento and close to all the main sights of the lovely town. Piazza Tasso is surrounded by quaint but touristy restaurants some of which are expensive but some are reasonably priced. It is a short walk to the train station and to the harbour for the ferries to Naples, Ischia and the Isle of Capri. It is the oldest hotel in the town being built in 1854 and is close to all the main sights of this beautiful lovely town on the Sorrentine Peninsula. The station is a ten minute stroll away which is handy to take you into Naples where you can change and take trains to other areas of Italy passing stations serving Pompeii and Herculaneum and Vesuvius on the way.
The hotel only has 21 rooms including singles, doubles, triples and two rooms with a large terrace overlooking the Piazza and it is a family run hotel. Adjoining the hotel is a travel bureaux where you can book excursions to the surrounding historical sites however bear in mind these are much more expensive than doing the sites independently,

Arrival and check in.
We arrived at the hotel just after lunch time and were welcomed by the cheerful receptionist who checked us in quickly and efficiently. The reception area is bright and cheerful containing some quite old furniture. The lift is quite tiny and it can really only cope with two people in the lift at any one time unless of course you are very friendly.

We booked a terrace room so that we could sit outside of an evening to enjoy the fresh air and peace and quiet of the warm Italian evenings not to mention the fact that it enabled me to go out on the terrace to enjoy a lovely cup of coffee in the mornings when I woke at silly O’clock. The hotel provides free wifi which is quite handy although the signal was usually consistent. You have to obtain a code from the reception desk in order to log on but the code will last for the duration of your stay.

Our room.

The room is on the top floor of the hotel and to get in the door lock is still operated by a good old key on a very heavy key ring. We left the key at reception each time we went out as you would not really want to be carrying it around with you. After getting out of the lift we were right beside our room and thankfully we were not disturbed by the comings and goings of other guests.

Entering the room there is a wardrobe on the left and the bathroom is straight ahead of you. The bathroom is small and functional and was very clean. There were adequate toiletries provided which we never used. There was a toilet, a bidet, a shower and a small bath that had a massive shower head and also a hand held shower attachment should you rather use that. The water was piping hot whenever we needed it and the pressure was always high.

The room was quite tiny and included the twin beds, a writing table and chair two bedside tables with a telephone. It appeared very clean. The room was cleaned daily by the maid who replaced towels and bedding daily. There were large double glazed patio type doors which lead out onto the terrace with shutters on the outside to keep the heat out. The terrace was furnished with a table and two chairs plus two sun beds and was quite large with great views across Tasso square and down towards the sea. You could hear the hubbub of traffic and tourists feasting in the surrounding restaurants down below although I must say it was not disturbing in the least with the exception of one night when Naples won a game of Football and after the game people were dancing singing setting off fireworks in the square until about 2AM.

There was a flat screen television on the wall although we rarely watch television when away but it is there should you wish to watch it. There was a safe in the wardrobe which was quite handy to keep your belongings in when out for the day.

Breakfast.

There is a small breakfast room on the ground floor where breakfast can be taken between 07:30 and 10 am each morning. Breakfast was continental buffet style with an adequate supply and variety of food available. Perhaps not the greatest spread I have seen but offering the usual fayre including boiled eggs which you had to boil yourself in a heating thing, hams and cheeses. There was always a selection of bread Croissants donuts mini pain au Chocolate and one of those toasters that never seem to toast the bread.

Coffee is disappointingly obtained from a machine which being in Italy was a huge disappointment for me however the coffee was surprisingly good but the machine was temperamental at times sometimes just dispensing milk or coffee as it saw fit and depending on its mood. Most of the time the cup overflowed into the drip tray. There was a selection of fruit, cereals and yoghurt. It is a standard continental breakfast and you will certainly not starve here as there is something for everyone.

The hotel does not offer any evening meal which in a way is not a bad thing but there are plenty of restaurants five minutes away in the square which was lovely as you could try all the different restaurants in the area. A word of advice though should you stay here do not eat in Tasso Square find some of the beautiful restaurants in the surrounding side streets you will get a much better meal and at a fraction of the price. Tasso Square is definitely a people watching area with many of the restaurants spreading out onto the pavements.

Overall opinion.

If you are looking for luxury this is not the place for you however if you are looking for a clean small friendly and well run hotel that is in the centre of all the action then this is definitely right up your street. It is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. I found the staff were always willing to offer advice and were always cheerful. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel room prices are fairly reasonable ranging from 82 Euros for a single room in low season to 214 for a triple room in high season.
