Ulughbek was more famous as an astronomer than a ruler. About 1km from Registan are the ramains of an immense (30m tall) astrolabe for obsering star positions, part of a 3 storey observatory he built in the 1420's. All that remain is the instrument's curved track, un earth in 1908. Nice view on Samarkand. Next door is a small museum dedicated to the scientist.
