the souk

it's rows and rows of colourful shops and stalls, selling everything and anything, provided it's local. Things to buy are Candies and Sweets, Berber Silver Jewellery, Pottery and Ceramics, Carpets (Alloucha and Margoums from kairouan are supposed to be Tunisia's finest), Wallhangings, Handmade Bird Cages (really bizarre).
one of the must-do things in a souk is bargaining. The advice i was given is to start by offering to pay 1/4 of the price they ask you and work the price up. This practice, I'm afraid, takes time; in the case of a friend it took him 30 minutes to buy a hand-painted plate. One way of cutting your business shortly is to leave: you'll soon be followed by the salesperson more or less matching the last price you had said. If bargaining is not for you there's a state-owned shops where you can buy products at fixed prices: they are called SOCOPA
