the Medina

Medinas are the walled artisan's quarters - and Kairouan's Medina is just this. A maze of little alleys and streets leading to nowhere in particular but full of charm and traditional buildongs. Walking around it and getting lost in it is the best way to appreciate it: you'll see scenes from daily life, beautifully decorated doors, cheerful buindings, Koranic schools. There were very few other tourists in sight and we had the place all to ourselves - sometimes when we looked obviously lost - someone would step out of his house and point us to a street or alley which did not have a dead-end.
