The major tourist attraction here according to the local tourist board are apparently the tinajones, after examining these for a couple of days I come to the rather stunning conclusion that these are big jugs, as in "vessels for holding water" and not as in "look at the tinajones on that".
The city has always suffered from chronic water shortages and so the local potters constructed these large clay jugs to catch and store the rainwater. Soon all the large families had a tinajones in the courtyard of their house and they became something of a status symbol with bigger being better.
These jugs that still dot the city have become the symbol of a city that is somewhat imaginatively nicknamed the City of Tinajones but it really is difficult to see how these are expected to hold much appeal for the foreign tourist and I really can't help but feel that the city is going to have to find a better tourist draw.
There is a story that says that if you drink from on of these jugs you will fall in love and never leave the city. I don't know if there is any truth to this local legend but just in case I take the precaution of not drinking from one of the jugs.
