MS Dixie II - Emerald Bay Cruise

This was the second cruise we took during the week on the MS Dixie, a sternwheeler. This trip took us to Emerald Bay, the only part of Lake Tahoe that is Emerald green and not Blue. It is the site of the only island on all of Lake Tahoe and at one time it had a tea house on it. Now the shell is all that remains. At the far end of the bay is also Vikingsholm Castle which is the most realistic Nordic Castle in North America. This boat trip we spent the entire trip on the third deck at the stern of the boat with the sternwheel splashing us with a fine mist. The boat holds about 200 people, but this one was about half full.

MS Dixie II - Sunset Dinner Dance Cruise

This is a 3 1/2 hour dinner and dancing cruise on Lake Tahoe. We could choose from one of 4 entrees including New York steak, broiled Salmon, Honey Dijon Chicken or Tortellini Alfredo. They included wine throughout the meal. There was a live band for dancing. The cruise is offered year round. Because we were there is September, it got dark early and rendered sightseeing a little useless. If I go again at this time of year, it will be a daytime cruise for me. It was a bit chilly on deck, too, in September. We shared our evening with a small, cheesey wedding party that was on the boat as well so we had to sit through a bad toast by the father of the bride.

I thought the outing would be a a bit more romantic, but - it really was not.

The boat is a huge 570-passenger paddlewheeler. It was spacious and comfortable and despite it being cold on deck, there are lots of large picture windows for viewing from the warm interior.

The cruise starts outside Harvey's Casino and cruises to Emerald Bay. The Boat was an old paddle steamer and will cruise 8 months out of the year weather permit. Thiis cruise is highly recommended.
