We were, of course, shuttled from one rug shop to another. The merchandise was fabulous, rich and colorful and expensive. Several shopkeepers joked that they would be glad to work out a trade for one wife per rug. Our husbands all laughed nervously and peeked at the wives to see if we were offended (we weren't). We were unable to purchase any of the immense tapestries, however, the shops also carried some small curios which were priced for the tourist trade.
