We came upon the falls quite by accident. We had gone over to route 30 to find the farmers vegetable and fruit stands. It was starting to rain so we decided to stay on Route 30 for our return trip instead of the winding side road we had traveled coming in.
As we came to the top of a hill we saw a small sign that read Waterfall Outlook. We turned around (55 mph on that road so easy to pass things by) and drove into the overlook.
A ranger was stationed there that day to warn people it was slippery. We had sandals on and the girls weren't with us so we took the ranger's advice on the trails and decided to return another day.
The falls are about 15-20 minutes from Deer Run Village and worth the trip. It was much more beautiful than I had imagined. A sign at the top of the trails indicated the falls used to be the power source for the town of Gilboa. The town itself had been abandoned after a fire and flood. Interesting history.
The hike down the trail to the right is the recommended path. About 5 minutes in, 15 minutes coming back. It can be a bit strenuous for those of us that are a bit out of shape (uphill coming back), but worth the effort. It brings you to the bottom of the falls for an unobstructed view. We also walked the overlook path that is mostly wooden walkways. This brings you pretty much to the top of the falls and you can see the source water coming in.
We told others at the resort about our find and they made plans to visit as well. The rec director wasn't aware of the falls and she was going to add them to her activity/directions listing.
This was a great find.
