Grand Rapids's antique scene is full of retro, Victorian, and primitive but is best-known for its furniture. Once rich in lumber, Michigan was known for manufacturing furniture well before the advent of the big three automakers. Home of Herman Miller, Baker, Heckman, Robert Shaw, and the Grand Rapids Furniture Co., West Michigan antiques stores offer high-quality pieces at resonable prices.
An avid antiques enthusiast and owner of a Victorian home, I have several shopping districts I would recommend.
First, the W. Fulton business district (corner of W. Fulton and Diamond) is a wonderful little spot with four antique shops. Two specialize in "shabby chic" painted furniture, and one carries vintage clothing. All are within walking distance of each other and near a nice very nice bakery and several art galleries.
Second, visit the three large (each 5,000+ square-foot) shops located on Century Ave. Difficult to reach and known only by the most learned treasure hunter, this is a must-see. Century Ave. runs parallel to the US 131 expressway and is best reached from Franklin Street. Housed in former furniture warehouses, Victoria's Warehouse Antiques, Jusilyn's Antiques, and Century Antiques offer a wide varity of goods at reasonable prices. These shopkeepers are not known for their artistic presentation, so the more refined buyer may give it a pass. All share a common parking lot and are within walking distance of each other.
Also known for less expensive and less pretentious antiques, my third recommendation is to take a look at West Leonard St. (west off US 131). One Man's Junk offers vintage clothing and stage backdrops and props, and there are three furniture stores with knowlegeable dealers. Though a short distance from each other, one may walk or drive.
Fourthly, drive along Wealthy St. (between Division Ave. and Fuller Ave.). Here you will find quality shops, with several specializing in architectural salvage. Also, nearby on Cherry St. (between Eastern Ave. and Lake Dr.) is a well-known shopkeeper specialising in Arts and Crafts furniture.
