Railroad Depot

Built in 1854 by slave labor using locally made bricks, the depot is now the centerpiece of the downtown area. The depot was occupied by Confederate troops during the War of Northern Agression. It was at this depot that Shurman cut the telegraph wires and began his infamous march to the sea.

The depot suffered damage from the effects of the war. Troops knocked out bricks to use as gun ports and burned the floor and roof. Additions and changes were made to the original structure as late as 1972. The historical significance of this depot are now recognized and efforts are being made to preserve its place in Georgia history.
