The Great Plaza is where we began and ended our Tikal meanderings. Coming from the entrance to the park, the trees clear to the back of the Plaza. Ascending around the pyramid's left side you enter the Plaza along the wide green lawn. Two pyramids rise on either side, facing each other as fraternal twins. On opposite sides of the pyramids are stairs leading away to other buildings. In front of them rise the stela, well beyond their glory days. The massive stone constructions frame the plaza, accentuating it size. An amazing place to sit under the shade of a tree, taking in the grandeur before continuing to explore the city of Tikal.

The Great Plaza

Save the best til last - see everything else before coming to the centre of town. This 3 acre complex dates back from 150 BC & is truly a site to behold. Temple 1 & 2 face each other over the central courtyard & the sides are the sites for old palaces, temples & ball courts. There are several interesting masks carved in the stonework (easily spotted by the little thatched huts that protect them).

Also take time to wander around the old palace rooms - some of them are still remarkably in tact.
