However if you want to visit the beach, it may be better to visit the nearby Deal and/or Sandwich beaches as these are sandier and I suspect cleaner. The beaches at Dover are made up of pebbles and are overshadowed by the old solid piers that loom over the beaches and as a child I used to find them rather intimidating. I also remember being told horror stories of how kids had swam to close to the pier and had got tangled up in the old fishing wire and hooks that were in the sea bed, needless to say we always stayed at the end farthest away from the pier.
