Monkey Sanctuary

I actually developed a phobia of monkeys after being attacked by one in China last summer, but I decided to try to get over my fear. It didn't work. I hate monkeys.

This is an excellent little attraction. Fair enough that you can see monkeys in most parts of Bali, but here they come right up to you as they are well acquainted to the activities of humans – in some respects only too well acquainted.

Whatever you do, don’t leave your bags open or lying around as the monkeys will be off with them as soon as you turn your back. The staff of the park will feed the monkeys and offer you the same opportunity, but if you want a good photo then it's best to avoid being associated with food. Another word of caution is that you should never bare your teeth as this is a sign of aggression – fine if your on a one to one situation, but here you are well and truly outnumbered so again play it easy.

The forest has it's own dedicated car park on the road just a little to the west of the entrance (more or less where the main stretch of shops begin).

You have to come and have a look at the Monkey Forest if you come to Ubud. I personally found it quite touristy (even though I know that it is a sacred site) so I can't say I got really excited about it.

However there are a lot of monkeys in this sanctuary and they have the run of it. They are not shy however do generally keep their distance (and I certainly kept mine!). You are not supposed to feed them (they look very well fed anyway) but normally one of the local tour guides that are present with the organised tours will have a treat like a yummy banana to feed them so they pose for your camera.
