Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area

Located about 20 miles north of Greenville, this is South Carolina's most pristine mountain wilderness. Two state parks(Caesars Head and Jones Gap) make up this 10,000-acre expanse of unspoiled natural habitat. The visitors center, located on top of Caesars Head, provides information about the park, hiking trails, primitive camping, and souvenirs. Near the visitors center, you can walk out to an overlook, which provides a breath-taking view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. A wide assortment of scenic vistas and waterfalls are located throughout the park. At 420 feet tall, Raven Cliff Falls is probably the best-known of the waterfalls. Jones Gap has a nice little nature center whose front porch comes complete with rocking chairs. An old fish hatchery here is stocked with rainbow, brook, and brown trout. Primitive trailside camping and trout fishing in the Middle Saluda River are also popular activities here. The area abounds with wildlife, such as wild turkey, deer, and bear, but the main attraction here are the hawks, peregrine falcons, and bald eagles, who roost on the high rocky cliffs.
