Pipila by Night

We caught the end of the sunset at the top of the Funicular Panoramico (20 pst return fare) at the Pipila. The monument is visible from most parts of the city, and sitting under it, you get a clear view across Guanajuato. Many gift shops seem to be popping up, and during the day, it may be a good place to hunt for souvenirs. By night, it’s a wonderful place to stop and contemplate the vibrant city below (but be sure to take mosquito repellent with you!).

Pipila

At the base of the hill of Pipila are both a set of stairs and a tram. The visitor can walk up the stairs for 170m or pay 17 pesos for a round-trip ride on the tram. Either way, there is still a small climb to the top of the mountain. Tourist and souvenir shops are placed in many areas along the top of the mountain. Farther, a 40-foot high statue has been erected to watch and protect over the city. Numerous viewing areas are spaced along the sides, from which anyone can find marvelous views of the city of Guanajuato.

Pipila - The view from the top

Pipila is Guanajuato’s hero, famed for burning down the doors of the granary where the Spanish were holed up during the revolution. Pipila’s monument sits on a hill above the city. Visit Pipila for the view--the whole city is laid out before you.
