Project Eco-Quetzal and the people of the community of Chicanab run the Eco-Tourism program. Trips are organized in their Coban office, trips can be taken for 1 night 2 days or 2 nights and 3 days. Trips can be organized for 1 or more people. The trips involve 1 or 2 people being taken by a local trained guide who is the father/husband of one of the 25 families involved in the tourism program. Group numbers are kept to 2 people so that the guides family can accommodate you in their house. If you are a bigger group don’t worry it just means having more than 1 guide and family. The guide will take you to Chicanab, then his house in the mountains. The journey takes 2 hours by bus and a 3 hour hike, you will be taken into his house as a guest, during your stay you will have the chance to hike in the forest also to become part of a rural family for a few days.
After signing up in the office a day before you want to depart, you will be given a brief description of what to expect in the mountains. It is important to remember that the project has tried not to change the local people's life too much by having tourists. The accommodations and food will be basic. It pays to remember that this is no 3 star hotel. The house is traditionally made in most cases, dirt floor, animals, kids the whole rural scene. It has been kept the way it is so that, tourist get the chance to really see and experience, how life is lived in the highlands. Most tourists in Guatemala see the Mayan people, but they never get the chance to really get to know them or see how they live. This is a chance to step into there shoes. A 2 night 3 day tour costs $35US per person this includes meals, guide, accommodation and a registration fee. The family receives directly over 50 percent of this money. This extra income helps the family immensely, also it gives them a positive reason to protect the cloudforest.
