There were also lots of impersonators of the show’s characters: Otis, Howard, Goober, Opie, and Floyd. Barney is the best, as he was running up and down the street next to the parade trying to direct the traffic!
After the parade, we strolled in the shops on Main Street. Do you like the theme song from the Andy Griffith Show? We heard that whistling tune in every, yes I said EVERY shop we went in. There's even a version where Andy himself sings the lyrics. IT about going down to the fishing hole.
It was a most enjoyable day! Be sure to go to next year’s parade; they get better every year!

This 3-day festival has the following activities each year: a golf tournament (Thursday afternoon), two concerts by The Doug Dillard Band (Friday afternoon and evening), the Mayberry Days Parade (Saturday morning), and "Colonel Tim’s Talent Time" (Saturday night). Then there are other events they have yearly, too. These include the Mayberry trivia contest, "Mrs. Wiley’s Tea," free walking tours, live bluegrass music, and a pie-eating contest. In addition, it has the locals who look like Barney Fife (David "The Mayberry Deputy" Browning and Floyd the Barber (Allan Newsome)) in the festival.
Locals claim the hotels and B&Bs fill up quickly for this celebration, so you must book in advance. Also, the ticketed events such as The Doug Dillard Band concerts and "Colonel Tim’s" sell out fast. The upcoming festival for this year is September 22 to 25, 2005.
I really think that in order to get the true ambience of Mount Airy/Mayberry, you must attend Mayberry Days. Unfortunately, we were not present there at this time, and I regret it. But someday we will return to the real Mayberry-Mount Airy and may be enter the pie-eating contest and the "Pickle Queen" contest (if non-locals can) and see the former celebrities from "The Andy Griffith Show."
