Galway - Eat, drink & be merry!

Galway is a very pleasant city, with an older feel than Dublin possibly because of the narrower streets. The city seems permanently popular with tourists, and recommended by all for it’s pubs, restaurants, nightlife - essentially ‘the craic’.

ACCOMMODATION
Bed & Breakfast appears to be the mainstay of the accommodation options.

We would recommend the bright yellow B&B just off Father Griffin Road just after Adair House on the right when heading out of town. £25 per person in a double with en suite and colour TV, and the obligatory Irish breakfast (and more than happy to cater for other options). An easy 5 min walk across Wolfe Tone Bridge to the bottom of The Quays.

EATING
* Mama’s, Middle Street – A great Asian restaurant featuring dishes from all over South East Asia run by Freddy, a friendly Singaporean.
* Busker Browns, Upper Cross Street – Just past the café-bar (heading away from Quay Street) Busker Brown’s Restaurant was excellent, and relatively good value. The seafood platter for two, a sea of shellfish and smoked fish, plus a side order of veges and a bottle of wine came to IR£53.

DRINKING
Recommendations from a friend from Galway were:-
* Neachtain’s (pronounced something like ‘Nucktans’), although we found the bar staff keener on serving people they knew, and the air rather too smoky.
* The Quays for music, although a little touristy.
* An Pucan, again for music.
* An Tobar, Main Street was recommended as a non-smoking bar which unfortunately proved not to be so (In the year we have been living in Dublin there has been a debate about non-smoking bars, which concluded that smoke was an essential characteristic of an Irish pub!). However, our own find was the pub literally on that corner where not only were there very few smokers, but had the feel of a student house!
