Clifden was a handy base for the heart of Connemara, a popular spot for Irish stag weekends, and it has a cash till!,
Things to Do - ‘Real Irish Music’ seems to be the mainstay of entertainment in the evening. Many of the pubs were a little too commercial, with large crowds of Americans, and heavily amplified music, namely Mannions, and E.J Kings. As people were spilling out of the door of Mannions, we instead looked to the plain looking pub to the left where we found what we felt to be more genuine and at least less amplified music.
Accommodation - Hampered by our desire for our B&B’s to look aesthetically pleasing and not like Madame Pompadour’s, nor the wish to be kept awake by live music, we weren’t really inspired in Clifden. Our choice (almost directly opposite Kingstown B&B, on the corner of Bridge Street) proved not to be brilliant as we were asked by the owners daughter to pay up front for the night after an Australian receptionist had said we needn’t. We were awakened at 8am by a knock on our door saying breakfast was ready!
Eating - Off the Square Restaurant, Main Street - An excellent, very new looking restaurant, where another seafood feast (I treated myself to oysters followed by lobster) with wine came to IR£56.
