A grand plaza indeed. It is right off a walking street with many shops. The shops are all like boutiques. We bought a leather belt for a pretty good deal. Montevideo was one of the first cities with plumbing which brought running water. It was an easy walk from the Puerto Market to here. You can get good maps of Montevideo, which are put out by the Uruguay Natural.

This large plaza is prominently located in the heart of Montevideo. The mausoleum of General Artigas, perhaps the greatest Uruguayan national hero, lies at the center and is marked by an accompanying equestrian statue. From here, take a sweeping look around the square and you will see an old archway remnant, hotels, office buildings, and the Palacio Salvo, whose 26 stories made it the tallest building in South America upon its completion in 1927. The Salvo is still the tallest building in Montevideo (for now), and its gracefully hulking style tends to dominate the views of the city.
